Our response to "Unsafe people" in our school
To teach the students K-4 about ALICE, Mrs. Zimmer and Mrs. Wilson visited each class to read the book "I'm Not Scared, I'm Prepared Because I Know All About ALICE," by Julia Cook and answer student questions and worries. Click the link to the ALICE Training Institute to learn more about this book and a brief overview of the age appropriate response to a very real problem faced by our society today. Please be aware that we have multiple copies of this book available for students/teachers to check out from the Meadowbrook School Library if you are interested in reading the book yourself or to prompt a follow-up discussion or review at home with your child.
Alert-This means those first moments when we are alerted that there may be danger. Through our senses, something tells us that things aren't right. It might be hearing something (like an alarm, a whistle, yelling) seeing something (like sudden, really dark clouds), smelling something (like smoke in a fire).
Lockdown-At times we may have to barricade ourselves in a room. The goal is to make it look like no one is in the room and either prevent or slow down the unsafe person from entering the room.
Inform-This means we continue to get updated, accurate information during the emergency so that we can make the best decisions to keep ourselves safe.
Counter-React to and distract the unsafe person.
Evacuate-Get out of the building!!
