Self-Esteem
Today the kindergarten students heard the story of Brownie Bear. He was a bear that had some amazing and wonderful skills, talents, interests, and hobbies, but he was unhappy because he only focused on things he was NOT good at. He went on a journey and repeatedly changed things about his outside, hoping it would change who he was on the inside. By the end of his journey, he realized all of the great things about himself that he hadn't been paying attention to and finally was content to truly be himself.
We talked about how each and every one of us also have special things inside us that we should be paying attention to and sharing with others. Other people cannot see these things just by looking at us but know they are there after they get to know us or after we share it with them. The students were encouraged to go home and talk about or share a "gift" they have inside themselves with a safe adult, whether it be a skill, hobby, or interest. They were also encouraged to ask one of their safe adults about a gift their adult has that they may not know about. Last year, one student came back to school the next day and incredulously announced that his dad used to be in a band and is a pretty good guitarist! It was neat to hear about all the "gifts" that were discussed and shared at home!
