the brain
Today Mrs. Wilson entered our classroom wearing a brain hat! She taught us about the different parts of the brain and what it looks like when they are in charge. We learned where the different parts are located, practiced saying their names, and discussed what they are responsible for. See the handout below for details on what we learned!
As an introduction, we reviewed the different parts of a stoplight and what messages the colors send. Green tells us to keep going; everything is safe and good. Red tells us to stop; it isn't safe to keep going. Yellow tells us to be cautious; we aren't sure exactly what is ahead. We use these colors to help connect to the different parts of the brain and to help us remember what to do when the different parts of the brain are in charge.

Finally, we talked about how the frontal lobe should always be in charge at school. It helps us focus, learn new information, problem-solve, think things through, and follow the Bulldog Way. If we feel our brain starting to "slip" a bit, the best way to refocus our brain and get it back to where it needs to be is simple: we just need to breathe! Our breathing should be slow, deep, and calm. Check out the video link "Belly Breathe" for an example (and a really great song!)
