the brain
Today Mrs. Wilson reviewed the different parts of the brain and what it looks like when they are in charge. She reminded us where the different parts are located and what they are responsible for. See the handout below for details on what we learned!

what can i do if my brain starts to "slip"?
We also reviewed the things we have to do if our brain starts to "slip" from the frontal lobe (the part that should always be in charge at school). The best way to refocus our brain and get it back to where it needs to be is simple: we just need to breathe! Our breathing should be slow, deep, and calm. Fast, short breaths or holding our breath sends a message to our brains that something is wrong. We can also help our brain and body by controlling our muscles. Tight, flexed muscles also send a message to our brain that something is wrong. Relaxed, controlled muscles calm us down and help us get back to the frontal lobe being in charge. We did an experiment in class where we pretended to be mad for a slow count to five. We all made angry faces, tensed our muscles, and changed our breathing. Even though we had nothing to be mad about, some of us actually felt mad because of the messages our brain was getting from our body! We got back to a normal, calm state by doing some of the breathing exercises. Check out the handout below and ask your child to show you how they are done!
