body safety
This week when we met we read part of a book on body safety. We talked again about how school and home sometimes have very different rules. At home, most kids expect hugs and kisses, especially at bed time, but these things are not appropriate at school! We introduced "swimsuit parts" and discussed how these parts should not be talked about or touched at school. (Check out the handout page)
We also talked about how we are in charge of our bodies and if there are other touches that are typically okay, but that make us uncomfortable we can tell the person, "that makes me uncomfortable," "I don't like that," or "please stop." Mrs. Wilson shared that she does not like when people touch her left knee, where she has a scar. This is not a swimsuit part, but it makes her uncomfortable. Once she tells someone she does not like it, they must respect that and not touch that area of her body.
Then, we did a game called Mrs. Wilson Says. This game is like Simon Says but allowed us to practice appropriate touches and ways to connect in school, such as high fiving, fist bumping, and non-touches like waving, thumbs up, and smiles.

"Swimsuit Parts" Body Cut-outs
These little guys are laminated cut-outs that are used during Life Skills to talk about where our "swimsuit parts" are. The red parts are like a stop sign. These are the parts we do not talk about or touch at school. I always tell the kids that if I ever re-make them, I might add red to the faces. These are not swimsuit parts, but they are parts that people should also not be talking about or touching at school!
